Building a Church that is Open to All
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, comes from a family of Italian immigrants who settled in Argentina in the early 20th century.
His father, Mario Jose Bergoglio, was an Italian immigrant who worked as an accountant, and his mother, Regina Maria Sivori, was also of Italian descent. They had five children, including Jorge, who was born on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Jorge’s childhood was marked by a strong Catholic faith, and his family was involved in the local parish. He was educated in Catholic schools, and his mother played a significant role in shaping his religious beliefs and values.
After completing his education, Jorge Bergoglio joined the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1958 and was ordained a Catholic priest in 1969. He held several positions within the Jesuit order in Argentina, including seminary director, provincial, and rector.

In 1992, Bergoglio was named auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires, and two years later, he was appointed archbishop of Buenos Aires. He became known for his commitment to social justice issues and his support for the poor and marginalized. In 2001, he was elevated to the position of cardinal by Pope John Paul II.
In March 2013, Bergoglio was elected pope of the Catholic Church, becoming the first pope from the Americas and taking the name Francis. As pope, he has continued his work on social justice issues, advocating for the environment, refugees, and immigrants, among other cause
