Rahul Sharad Dravid, popularly known as “The Wall” in the cricketing fraternity, is a former Indian cricketer who was born on January 11, 1973, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India. Dravid is widely regarded as one of the greatest cricketers in the history of the sport and is considered to be a cricketing legend.

Early Life and Education:

Dravid’s father worked for a company that made jams and preserves. Dravid’s family moved to Bangalore when he was a child, and he attended St. Joseph’s Boys High School and then St. Joseph’s College of Commerce, where he earned a degree in commerce. During his early years, Dravid had a keen interest in sports, and he played hockey and football before eventually turning to cricket.

Career:

Domestic Career:

Dravid began his cricketing journey at the age of 12 when he joined the Bangalore-based cricket club “Young Cricketers.” He then went on to play for the Karnataka under-15 and under-17 teams, and eventually made his debut for the Karnataka Ranji Trophy team in 1991-92. In his debut season, Dravid scored an impressive 380 runs in six matches, including two centuries, and helped his team win the championship.

Dravid continued to impress with his performances in the domestic circuit and was soon called up to the Indian national team for the first time in 1996.

International Career:

Dravid made his international debut in an ODI against Sri Lanka in 1996 and scored just 3 runs. However, he soon made his mark in the Indian team, scoring a century in only his third ODI against Pakistan. Dravid’s Test debut came later that year, against England at Lord’s, where he scored 95 in his very first innings.

Dravid soon established himself as a mainstay of the Indian batting line-up, and along with Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, formed the famous “Fab Four” of Indian cricket. Dravid was known for his solid technique, unflappable temperament, and the ability to play long innings. He was equally comfortable batting at any position in the order, and often played the role of a sheet anchor, holding the innings together while his more aggressive teammates played around him.

Dravid’s finest hour came in the 2001 Test series against Australia, where he scored a mammoth 180 in the second innings of the Kolkata Test, helping India pull off an improbable victory after following on. Dravid scored a total of 619 runs in that series, including three centuries, and was named the Player of the Series.

Dravid continued to play for India for another decade, and was an integral part of the Indian team that won the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 and reached the final of the 2003 World Cup. In 2012, Dravid announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a glorious career that spanned 16 years.

Post-Retirement:

After his retirement, Dravid took up coaching and became the mentor of the Rajasthan Royals team in the Indian Premier League. He also served as the head coach of the India A and Under-19 teams and played a crucial role in developing young talent in Indian cricket. Dravid was also appointed as the head of the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore in 2019.
