Sherri Evonne Shepherd was born on April 22, 1967, in Chicago, Illinois. She grew up in the suburb of Hoffman Estates with her parents, Lawrence A. Shepherd and LaVerne Shepherd, and her three siblings. As a child, Shepherd was raised in a strict religious household and attended various Pentecostal churches throughout her youth. Her father was a deacon in the church, and she sang in the choir, which would eventually lead to her passion for performing.

Growing up, Shepherd was an excellent student, graduating from Hoffman Estates High School in 1985. She then attended the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, where she studied pre-law.
