Vat Savitri Vrat 2023: A Celebration of Love, Devotion, and Eternal Blessings
Introduction: Vat Savitri Vrat is a sacred observance that holds great significance for married women. It is believed that by observing this fast, the wishes of married women are fulfilled, bringing happiness, prosperity, and a long life for their husbands. Celebrated annually on the new moon day and full moon day of the Jyestha month, this festival is rooted in ancient scriptures and has been passed down through generations. The Vat Savitri Vrat Katha, or the fasting story, narrates a tale of love, devotion, and the ultimate triumph of a devoted wife.
The Story of Vat Savitri Vrat: In ancient times, there lived a benevolent and virtuous king named Ashwapati in the land of Bhadra. Despite being respected and loved by his subjects, the king and queen faced the sorrow of not having children for many years. Desperate to have a child, King Ashwapati fervently performed Yagya and Havan rituals. His devotion caught the attention of Mother Gayatri, who appeared before him and granted him a boon.
With immense gratitude, King Ashwapati expressed his desire for a child. Mother Gayatri assured him that his wish would be fulfilled and vanished. Soon after, a beautiful girl named Savitri was born to the royal couple. As Savitri grew up, no suitable groom could be found for her, prompting King Ashwapati to advise his daughter to seek a husband on her own.
Eventually, Savitri encountered King Dyumatsen, and they fell deeply in love. Savitri expressed her desire to marry Dyumatsen to her father. However, when the sage Narad learned about this union, he warned King Ashwapati that Dyumatsen’s life would be short-lived. Despite the warning, Savitri remained resolute in her decision to marry Dyumatsen.
Tragedy struck shortly after their marriage when King Dyumatsen met an untimely demise. As the god of death, Yamraj, arrived to take Dyumatsen’s soul, Savitri fearlessly followed him. Surprised by her unwavering determination, Yamraj attempted to dissuade Savitri but to no avail. Impressed by her devotion, Yamraj offered her three boons.
Savitri wisely utilized the boons to secure the welfare of her in-laws, the restoration of Dyumatsen’s lost kingdom, and the blessing of becoming the mother of a hundred sons. However, Savitri cleverly reminded Yamraj that she couldn’t fulfill the third boon without her husband by her side. Moved by her steadfast love, Yamraj freed Dyumatsen from his clutches and granted them a happy and prosperous life.
